Urumqi Travel Information

The name of this cityUrumqi, is the spelling of ancient Jungar Mongolian language means "Beautiful pastures".- Located in the northwest of China, Urumqi is the capital of Xinjiang Uyhgur Autonomous Region. It is re-gional center for road, rail and air communications. Also Urumqi's industrial plants, educational institutes and commercial activities are the hub of Xinjiang's economy.

Population and Area
Urumqi is a multinational city with a population of 2.08 million. There are thirteen major nationalities living in the city, including the Uyghur, Kazakh, Han, Hui, Xibo, Mongol, Kirghiz, Uzbek, Manchu, Russian, Tartar, Dahour and Tajik, etc. Because of the most minority people wor-ship to Islam, the major food style here is Muslim food. The whole city was built along the Urumqi River valley at the foot of Tianshan Mountain. The area of Urumqi is 11 440 square kilometers with an elevation of 680 to 920 meters, of which 49. 3 square kilometers are covered by the city proper, with 16 kilometers from northwest to the southeast, and the widest place in the city from east to west is 2 to 6 kilometers. The city Urumqi has seven dis-tricts and one county under its jurisdiction.

Urumqi city belongs to temperate continental mon-soon climate zone, which has four distinct seasons. Spring and autumn are quite short, while winter is very long. The average temperature in the whole year is 7.3C. The aver-age temperature in summer (July) is 25.7C. The average temperature in winter (January) is - 15.2C. The annual average rainfall is 194 millimeters, which is mainly in win-ter.

As early as the Han Dynasty (206BC - 220), here was a part of West Region, immigrants from the inland of China reclaimed the land and agriculture was initiated. A-bout the 7th century in Tang Dynasty, troops were sta-tioned in the Urumqi area to develop the land and to build frontier fortifications. In the year 1758, the history came to the Qing Dynasty, the Qing troops built barracks on the east side of the Urumqi River. 5 years later, a new city was built and named "Dihua", which in Chinese means "enlightening and civilizing". In 1954, the city was re-named Urumqi. For the city construction history is short, it can be "the youngest city on the ancient Silk Road".
